The Project

​

Absolution is a top down shooter where you play Lyna, a woman trapped in her own purgatory after committing suicide. With the help of Hesediel, her guardian angel, she will have to fight demons through the stages of the purgatory to escape.

What I did as a system designer

  • Several brainstorming : with the whole team, to decide what we wanted to narrate, the type of gameplay, on what we needed to focus given the time we had and the artistic direction.

  • Content Design : with the game design part of the team, to look for character upgrades that would work with our vision of the gameplay, the level design and that would be possible for the technical designer to program.

​

  • Game Design Documentation : to illustrate all the aspects of our project so any question would find its answer inside these documents and to "sell" it if it was a commercial project.

​

  • Balancing : to find if any upgrade/enemy was too powerful or weak.

Angel mechanic

Firstly, we had to think about ho the angel would be complementary with the protagonist. The angel is important in the story so we didn't want to marginalize it as a simple way to gain statistics at the beginning of the runs. It mechanics hat to be useful and usable because the player has already the protagonist to control.

The angel is a little turret that mainly stays around the character. It automatically shoots on enemies in its range and inflicts little damages. After a few runs done, the player can buy definitive upgrades for the protagonist and the angel. Among the angel' upgrades, there are auras. The player can send the angel at the position of the reticule and it will stay there and use the selected aura as long as the player doesn't call it back. The first aura is a zone that slow down all the enemies inside. The second is a zone in which the enemies take more damages. The last one (which is activated by default) is the turret mode.
